The hand sewing certainly requires practise, but then so would knitting I assume. It is enormously satisfying, and sitting with a pile of fabric in your lap moving your arm constantly is a really good way to keep warm (also a disadvantage, I had to sit under a navy blue woolen kirtle, stitching away in 37C heat in January). I use backstitch for the seams and overcast stitch for the felling, usually.
